Convenience store roses

Raleigh, NC, 2014

Driving from Boone to Wilmington, i made a rest stop at a convenience store on the outskirts of Raleigh. I noticed these roses for sale in the beer coolers, and I was immediately struck by the visual poetry of this scene. Who is buying roses at a gas station, and who are they buying them for? What’s the occasion? an anniversary, perhaps? Maybe an “I’m sorry”. It seemed almost a bit tragic to find these delicate flowers in such an ugly place - unceremoniously dumped into a fridge display alongside more alcohol than it would take to kill a man.
