Convenience store roses
Raleigh, NC, 2014Driving from Boone to Wilmington, i made a rest stop at a convenience store on the outskirts of Raleigh. I noticed these roses for sale in the beer coolers, and I was immediately struck by the visual poetry of this scene. Who is buying roses at a gas station, and who are they buying them for? What’s the occasion? an anniversary, perhaps? Maybe an “I’m sorry”. It seemed almost a bit tragic to find these delicate flowers in such an ugly place - unceremoniously dumped into a fridge display alongside more alcohol than it would take to kill a man.
I’ve been playing around recently with stitching some of my old photos together into new compositions that force the viewer to make direct comparisons between two distinctly different subjects. Although the idea for this started as a preliminary idea for a drawing, I figured I’d keep making these combinations as a photography side-project.
